About

bio

Joenic France ‘Nicky’ Juanite is born and raised in the Philippines. She recently finished her degree in Composition-Korean Music at Seoul National University. She is now in her final year with her master's degree in Korean Music Composition at K'Arts (Korea National University of Arts), under the AMA Scholarship.

Nicky’s music career first began in the year of 2009 when she took the DCPMA-Asian Music at the College of Music at the University of the Philippines. There she learned musical instruments such as Philippine Kulintangan, Philippine Tongali, Kalingga ensembles, Chinese Guzheng, Indonesian Gamelan, Korean Samulnori, Japanese Koto, Afro-Latin ensemble, Brazilian Batucada, and Indian Sitar. Thus becoming a multi-instrumentalist.

Since then she has been involved in various local performances and was able to represent her country in some notable International performances in Thailand, South Korea, and Japan. Despite not being able to finish her degree at UP, it was the most critical chapter of her life, for she was able to learn and understand Asian instruments from a musician’s perspective.

In the year 2016,  Nicky was awarded the Korean Government 'GKS' scholarship to study composition under the kind guidance of the Korean Music Department at Seoul National University. Since academic composition will always feel new for her, she is patient and is willing to learn and understand the Asian instruments from a writer’s perspective. That is why she continued her studies at Korea National University, to deepen and widen her experiences with innovating traditional music.

She is an active composer, performer, and project organizer in the annual ‘Borderless Concert’ of SNU College of music. She’s purposely written her pieces for the Gugak instruments with the traditional Philippine instrument, the kulintang.

In the year 2019, her piece ‘ConFusion: Risk’ was internationally acknowledged during the annual International Symposium of the ASEAN Youth Ensemble at Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music in Thailand. She represented both the Philippines and South Korea

She is currently one of the music composers, and collaborating artist for the projects in ‘Salad Theatre,’ a multi-cultural theatre based in South Korea, and she collaborated with some of her works for the ‘Basement Theatre’ based in New Zealand. And at present, she is on a project to pursue film music highlighting the traditional music elements both from Korea, the Philippines, and Southeast Asian Tones
